VTAP product update: Universal NFC Wallet reader solutions
Latest updates include: new card & credential types; powerful Bluetooth features & comprehensive OSDP support for access control
Welcome to our first VTAP product update newsletter. We plan to bring you regular information about the ever-expanding set of hardware, firmware and software features built into the VTAP product portfolio.
There have been quite a few important and useful developments! Here are just 3 of the highlights:
New card and credential types
The VTAP core firmware has supported secure DESFire reading for many years, and this now includes support for Apple’s ECP2.0/Access protocols.
VTAP readers can handle multiple types of DESFire credentials in Apple Wallet, including our own ‘Key-ID’ credential format among many others, each employing either fixed or diversified keys (in accordance with NXP’s popular AN10922 key diversification guidance).
Most recently, we’ve added the secure block data reading capability for MIFARE Ultralight AES cards – enabling a new low-cost physical card/fob option for use alongside NFC wallet passes.
Powerful Bluetooth features
Our VTAP100 PRO BW reader has 2.4GHz Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interfaces and we’ve been continually adding features to take advantage of these.
Bluetooth beacon operation – the VTAP100 PRO can now act as a Bluetooth beacon, which can be used to automatically surface an NFC pass on nearby iPhone lock screens.
Barcode/QR code scanner pairing – enabling legacy optical cards and passes to be scanned alongside NFC.
BLE keyboard emulation – sending taps to a PoS or check-in application running on a mobile device. We also plan to add BLE GATT features to make the integration with mobile apps even faster and more reliable than keyboard emulation.
Comprehensive OSDP support
A VTAP100 access control reader with RS-485 has been available for some time, using our own serial comms protocol. The access control industry’s popular Open Supervised Device Protocol is now also supported in both Basic and Secure modes.
VTAP readers are now among the most powerful OSDP-capable readers on the market, with secure configuration, key and firmware file update capabilities. Forget using apps to configure your readers – simply send the familiar config and key files (supported by the entire VTAP reader family) via OSDP, and your reader is instantly updated!
OSDP can be used more generally – including secure processor-to-processor comms in embedded applications, so we’ve made it available across all VTAP serial comms interfaces, including: RS-232, 3v logic and virtual COM.
